CHICAGO (AP) – Two men have sued the village of Fox Lake and others claiming they were targeted during an investigation into the death of a corrupt Illinois police officer.
In the lawsuit filed Monday in Chicago federal court, Preston Shrewsbury and Manuel Vargas say they were harassed and their civil rights violated by officers in the days after Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz’s Sept. 1 death. Authorities launched a search for three men, one black, two white, the officer radioed he was pursuing.
Authorities say Gliniewicz killed himself because he believed his years of stealing money from a youth program were about to be exposed.
Then Lake County Major Crime Task Force commander George Filenko, named in the lawsuit, refused to comment, as did administrators in Libertyville and Fox Lake.
The third man, Vernon Randolph sued last year, alleging racial discrimination.
