Chicago mayor names new head of emergency management office

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications will be headed by the first female general of the Illinois National Guard.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday named Alicia Tate-Nadeau to lead the emergency response office, replacing retiring Gary Schenkel.

Schenkel presided over the $94.3 million-a-year agency that operates Chicago’s 911 emergency management operations since 2011. He once served as a top official in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Tate-Nadeau has served as assistant adjutant general of the Illinois National Guard, deputy commanding general of the Army National Guard’s Maneuver Support Center of Excellence. She also served on the FEMA regional team responding to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
