CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Members of the union that represents University of Illinois faculty who are not on a tenure track plan to strike for two days starting Tuesday.
Officials with the Nontenure-Track Faculty Coalition Local 6546 hope the strike and picketing give school administrators at the Urbana-Champaign campus appreciation for non-tenured faculty. The two sides are trying to find common ground on a contract they’ve been negotiating since October 2014.
Union members authorized the limited strike but an open-ended walkout would require further approval. Union officials say it isn’t clear how many members will strike. Campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler tells The (Champaign) News-Gazette that some union members have called administrators asking if they are required to strike.
The union represents about 500 instructors, researchers and other faculty.
