Labor board asks judge for injunction in Chicago school case

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois state labor officials have asked a judge for a temporary injunction against strikes like the one the Chicago Teachers Union had April 1.

Chicago Public Schools has filed an unfair labor practices charge against the CTU, arguing the union’s one-day strike was illegal. CPS and the union are in the middle of contract negotiations.

The Illinois Education Labor Relations Board on Thursday held a preliminary hearing on Chicago Public Schools’ charge. CPS wants the union to be prevented from holding strikes that it says are outside state law.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the board still has to hold a full hearing on the strike’s legality.

The union has said that federal law gives it authority to strike without complying with Illinois laws that require a series of steps before walkouts.
