CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — The mother of a Southern Illinois University student who died after fighting a driver with whom he had hitched a ride from a late-night party is pressing Carbondale elected leaders for more details about the circumstances that led to his death.
Lovely Varughese told the Carbondale City Council on Tuesday that she’s been given conflicting accounts of where and how her 19-year-old son from suburban Chicago was found in February 2014.
A county coroner ruled that Pravin Varughese died from hypothermia. An autopsy done for the family noted blunt force trauma to the head.
The Varughese family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver. The city of Carbondale and its former police chief were also named as defendants but later dismissed from the lawsuit.
