A Knox County judge today sentenced a Galesburg man to five years in prison for his involvement in a shooting last year.
Antonio M.R. Johnson waived his right to a jury trial this morning, kicking a bench trial into motion that gave way to a plea agreement. The 24 year old pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.
In exchange, a Class X count of attempted murder and several other firearm charges were dropped.
The case stems from a shooting last September in which Johnson shot and injured 20-year-old Alex Horton, a suspect in an earlier murder case. Horton had been sentenced to 180 days in jail — and credited all 180 days for time served — for his connection to the 2013 slaying of Galesburg teen Javon Butler, a relative of Johnson.
Chief Public Defender Dave Hansen and attorney Elisa Nelson represented Johnson. The case was presided over by Judge Scott Shipplett. Assistant State’s Attorneys Stephanie Hilton and Brian Kerr prosecuted the case.
