In response to recommendation from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, The City of Galesburg will comply with offering free water testing to residents with lead service lines and will offer water filters to individuals with blood levels exceeding the EPA’s lead action level standard.
According to city information, Galesburg officials have additionally modified a corrosion control program targeting lead in water and plan to complete a formal corrosion control study.
City Manager Todd Thompson discussed the possibility of heightened regulations at Monday’s City Council meeting, where he outlined $90,500 in proposed options, including each of the aforementioned resolutions.
Thompson told WGIL this afternoon he doesn’t expect the city to be required to provide the services for a “long period of time.” He also doesn’t anticipate the implementation of those services to be costly. Though he says it’s unknown, Thompson expects a minimal amount of people exceeding the action level.
Additional information on the program as well as quarterly public education on lead hazards are expected in the future.
