The Blue Ribbon Task Force of Knox County has held events all April long to raise awareness of child abuse and educate residents on what can prevent child abuse.
Wednesday is the 10th year the task force has held “Hands Around the Courthouse.”
Executive Director of the Knox County Child Advocacy Center Judy Guenseth tells WGIL that Hands Around the Courthouse is a culmination of the month full of events.
“People who work with this on a constantly ongoing basis, it’s just a way for them to have an event for the community to get involved and show support and just to bring awareness to the community about some of the statistics of child abuse,” Guenseth says.
She says only expect the event to last about 15 minutes with the climax being the joining of hands around the courthouse.
Last year they were enough people to make it around but she hopes that there’s a large turn out so they don’t need to use the blue ribbons to stretch between people.
“We want to have just a throng of people there showing their support for children who have been abused and to prevent children from being further abused,” Guenseth say.
Hands Around the Courthouse will start at 2 p.m. at the Knox County Courthouse where retiring State Rep. Don Moffitt will be the guest speaker.
Guenseth says that Moffitt was asked because he is a “man of character” who has supported the cause of child abuse prevention through out his legislative career.
