Cook County programs gives youth summer forest preserve jobs

CHICAGO (AP) — More than 100 young people will get the chance to earn money and experience the outdoors through a summer jobs program in Cook County’s forest preserves.

Cook County officials announced a new Forest Preserves Experience program on Wednesday. Youth who work in the program will learn how to mulch trees, remove invasive species and clean up rivers and lakes.

Forest Preserves General Superintendent Arnold Randall says “In addition to the work experience, participants will also learn why healthy forest preserves are important to the community.”

The program is in addition to the ongoing Chicago Conservation Leadership Corps, which trains youth ages 15 to 19 for future careers in conservation.

Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle says summer youth programs can reduce youth violence. A total of 166 youth will get jobs.
