Peoria community center finds $19,000 donated from Pryor

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — A Peoria community center where Richard Pryor made his first appearance as a child has received $19,000 from the late comedian.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports the George Washington Carver Community Center is getting the money from the state of Illinois’ unclaimed cash program. Pryor had donated $100,000 to the facility and the leftover amount somehow was left to languish in a bank account turned over to the state treasurer’s office in 1991.

The center’s board president, Ken Hinton, says the newly claimed funds will support summer youth programs.

Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs urged other not-for-profit groups, individuals and companies to check the state’s I-Cash program website at icash.illinois.gov for other outstanding sums.
