There was a whole lotta’ shavin’ going on yesterday in downtown Galesburg for the second annual Beards and Brews event.
Music, food and of course, beards were on hand for the first year Shave for the Brave has held a stand alone event.
The organization raised funds for the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, a veteran organization that flies those who served to visit memorials in Washington, D.C.
As of 10:30 p.m. last night, a little over $12,000 had been raised. Shave for the Brave co-founder Crystal Wilson told WGIL earlier in the day she was beyond pleased with the event’s inaugural success in the center of the city.
“The reality of it is pretty amazing,” Wilson said. “From our thoughts and our planning to actually seeing it in person–I have chills.”
The event started at the Orpheum Theatre with a beard contest, where 19 participants donned their best facial hair. Salutes from an honor guard made way to a motorcycle show and a party into the night when the event moved outside.
Wilson says she hopes the event can happen downtown again next year.
