Council to vote on grant application tonight

The first step toward a new bike path in town could take place at tonight’s Galesburg City Council meeting.

Aldermen are expected to vote on entering an application with IDOT through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program.

The project would put a path along South Lake Storey Rd. from Carl Sandburg College to the Villas at Carl Sandburg on Henderson St.

The city would pay $285,000 of the $1.35 million project. Council’s approval tonight would only be to apply for the grant.

Council documents indicate a decision on approval would be made sometime later this year. Galesburg would receive state funds next year, though, as Illinois nears an entire year without a budget, the project could be held up.

Council meets tonight at 6:30 p.m. inside City Hall.
