No serious damage was reported in Galesburg as storms crossed the region this morning, but other areas were less fortunate.
Andy Jenks farms near Monmouth and Cameron. He says corn on his land and surrounding areas were knocked down by powerful winds that reached near 70 mph. Jenks tells the WGIL Midday he remains hopeful despite the negative impact the storm will have on yield.
“In the next six to 10 days, here before the corn pollinates right around the first of July, I hope we get some heat to at least straighten it back out a little bit to make it a little easier,” he says. “It’s going to be a tough one to combine anyway. It’ll be goosenecked for sure, but hopefully it’ll straighten out a little bit.”
WGIL also received reports that corn and soybean fields had been flattened in the Roseville area. Ameren reported more than 1400 residents were without power in Warren County at one point.
A news release said Monmouth was “severely impacted” by the storms with 16 sub-transmission poles broken.
