This weekend is highlighted by events that embrace towns’ historic economic roots.

Galesburg Railroad Days is full speed ahead into Saturday and Sunday and the Monmouth Chamber of Commerce is hosting Pottery on the Square from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in downtown Monmouth.

Pottery on the Square is a swap meet for pottery collectors to sell, buy or trade.

An appraiser will be on site to consult free to the public.

According to Monmouth Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Angie McElwee this is the event’s 11th anniversary.

Kids Farm Safety Camp starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Knox County Fairgrounds.

Kids can learn not only farm safety but through eight rotating stations they will learn about how to be safe when dealing with animals, the sun, sounds, electricity and being prepared for an emergency.

Chair of Knox County’s Chapter of Farm Safety Just for Kids, Pat Hennenfent tells WGIL that one of the most useful classes is on fire safety.

“Because the kids learn about fire safety and everything else but they actually get to shoot a fire extinguisher and put a fire out so that should they ever be put in that place, they’d know what to do,” Hennenfent says.

Hennenfent says that participants can register as late as today.

He says they want to make sure they don’t turn anyway anyone that wants to be a part of safety camp and then “worry if that was a child that might have an accident.”
