Mr. Michael Dean Gilson, 70, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 5:05 am July 29, 2016 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.He was born July 16, 1946 in Galesburg the son of Gerald Dean and Evelyn Marie Nape Gilson. He married Martha Jean Smith on June 15, 1968 in Galesburg.
Michael is survived by his children, Matthew David (Deidra Jean) Gilson of Galesburg and Elizabeth Ann (Bernie) Merk of Vancouver Canada; his sister, Ruth (Harold) Bruner of Hockessin, Delaware; his three grandchildren, Lily Isabelle, Reed Matthew and Coen Richard Gilson and his nephew, Michael Bruner. He is preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Judith Bruner.
Michael was a teacher for over 30 years, retiring in 2001. He was a founder of the Carl Sandburg College Adult Education GED classes and taught them for several years. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1964 and Knox College In 1970. He was a former member of the Jaycees and the American Legion Band. He was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church. Michael enjoyed stamp collecting and cross word puzzles. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Memorial services are scheduled for 1:00 pm Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Central Congregational Church. Rev. Joyce Beaulieu will officiate. A time for fellowship will be from 6:00-8:00 pm Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at the church. Cremation will be accorded. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family.
