CHICAGO (AP) — The first phase of a project to build separate paths for bicyclists and pedestrians on Chicago’s Lakefront Trail is officially underway.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and officials from the Chicago Park District launched the construction project Sunday. It will create separate trails for bicyclists and pedestrians from 31st to 51st streets and Fullerton to Ohio streets.
Officials say the goal is to reduce congestion and make the popular trail more accessible to everyone.
Also on hand for the project launching ceremony were members of the Active Transit Alliance and the Chicago Area Runners Association.
The groups conducted a study recently that showed more than 100,000 people use the trail each day during summer weekends.
