Orpheum raising a glass to a century on Sunday

The Orpheum is almost 100.

They just had their centennial gala and are looking forward to a star-studded Red Carpet Series this year but Sunday will mark the official century mark.

The community is invited to an open house from 1-4 p.m. at the theatre.

Free tours will be given, historian Lily Blouin has a presentation of stories she’s collected from the Orpheum’s history.

Then at 2:15 p.m., exactly 100 years after the first curtain went up at the Orpheum, Theatre Executive Director Kevin Maynard will give a toast.

Guests will also be entered into a drawing for tickets to shows in this year’s red carpet series.

The open house will go even though this week’s Throwback Thursday movie had to be cancelled while a lift is in the theatre installing a new sound system.

That’s just the first in a series of projects the theatre will undertake in the next few years.

“The goal right now is to have all of that done by July of next year,” Maynard tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL. “So when we open up our co-production with Prairie Players there will be the new sound system installed by then but there will be new carpet, fixing of the facade and gutters and a whole list of items.”

On Monday Galesburg City Council approved the Orpheum for up to $82,600 in TIF grants to be distributed over five years.
