A Knoxville elementary school is taking a different approach at fundraising than most this year.
Mable Woolsey Elementary will hold their “Big Blue Bullet Blitz” Friday and Saturday to raise funds for programming like field trips, facilitated through the school’s parent-teacher organization. The two events being held are unlike most school fundraiser’s, in that they don’t use sales but instead promote health.
Mable Woolsey Principal Tara Bahnks says instead of asking kids to stereo-typically sell something, students will instead participate in something called a “walk for man kind.”
“They can either get flat donations or they can get pledges per lap,” Bahnks says. “Then we take the entire school over to the track complex and they run for anywhere between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on their grade level. So, we keep track of how many laps they run and those students who received pledges per lap will go home and collect those donations.”
On Saturday, taking off at 7 a.m., a 5K run with color will also be held to raise funds.
The run is $25 or $30 the day of the event and will begin at the Knoxville sports complex.
This is the second year for the fundraiser. Last year, the PTO set a goal of $10,000 which Bahnks says they needed to break even. The school exceeded the total, have set a slightly higher goal this year and are hoping to exceed their mark once again.
