Dennis Maurer is no longer an alderman for the City of Knoxville.
The acting mayor announced earlier this month after he was sworn in that he would render his resignation as alderman at the next meeting.
He became the acting mayor when former Mayor Bob Johnson resigned. Now there are 60 days for Maurer to appoint a replacement to represent the city’s 2nd ward.
While he can’t vote as an alderman as he did when he was mayor pro-tem, he does have veto powers and the ability to break a tie vote.
His last vote was to approve demolishing a “nuisance” property of Division Street and the six other council members agreed with him.
The abandoned property has about $12,000 in liens on it according to City Attorney Rob McCoy.
“My recommendation would be to tear it down and try to sell it later at some point,” McCoy said. “Right now, it’s probably a danger and the whole reason we started this process was because it is a nuisance property. It’s not getting better by the day, it’s getting worse.”
The property’s structure will demolished by city crews likely in the next few days.
On the same night they approved a demolition they also approved roof repairs for the Newman School Building. They accepted a bid from Gibbs Construction for $5,400.
