CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois State Police are investigating a shooting on a Chicago expressway that left a man dead and a woman critically injured.
The Thursday morning shooting is the latest example of a growing number of outbursts of violence on major thoroughfares in the Chicago metro area.
State police say the shooting happened before 6 a.m. on the westbound lanes of the Eisenhower Expressway, or Interstate 290, a few miles west of downtown Chicago. Police didn’t immediately have details about the shooting or the victims.
In recent months, the agency has said it is concerned about surging violence in Chicago that has spilled onto the expressways. More than 500 people have been killed this year.
The shooting prompted authorities to shut down expressway lanes during rush hour as they searched for evidence.
