When storms damaged the floor of Thiel Gym there may have been a silver lining.

Galesburg High School Athletic Director Jeff Flater says Kiefer Flooring is planning on beginning the installation of the floor tomorrow.

Flater thinks Silver Streaks fans are going to like the changes.

“I think what people are really going to see is that it’s going to be a much more family friendly atmosphere, in terms of the seating capacity and the seats,” Flater told Jim Lee and Brad Bennewitz during half time of Friday night’s football game. “Then, aesthetically it’s going to be outstanding. I really think think Theil Gym is going to be one of the marquee gyms in the area, no question.”

The brand new bleachers will be about two inches wider than the old ones with more leg room promised as well.

They’re actually the same bleachers fans current sit on in United High School’s gym. Flater says the district has put Kiefer under a “compressed timeline” to meet their goal of being ready for the girls basketball Thanksgiving tournament on Nov. 15.

The athletic director says alternative plans are being made in case that deadline can’t be met. The District 205 Board approved the floor for a price of $207,000 in August which is totally covered by insurance.

Also, after a long hiatus the lightning bolt logo is being brought back to be the image at center court.
