There are plenty of seats up for grabs this November but there are also some interesting stories about the candidates running for those seats.
George Knapp of Wataga is seeking his seventh term on the Knox County Board and politics aside, there is one thing that sets him apart.
“In about 10 more days I’ll be 91,” Knapp told WGIL yesterday.
By more than two decades, Knapp out ages any other candidate in any race on the ballot.
He admits he wasn’t planning to run again, but when no one else stepped up he gathered petitions and decided to seek re-election.
The District 4 board member has served on a number of committees amid the county and in other organizations since the 1990’s.
When asked why he continues to seek public service to this day?
“You have to really have an interest in it, and you’ve probably got some ideas that you would like to promote if you could,” Knapp says. “I just felt that there were some things that needed to be done.”
Knapp is running as a Democrat again this election cycle. He is running against Democrat Sara Varner and Republicans Shawn Cisna and Jared Hawkinson.
Voters in District 4 will elect the two candidates with the most votes.
UPDATED 9/5/16 AT 9 a.m. to reflect a correction. Knapp and the other candidates mentioned are running in District 4. It was previously reported as District 5.
