StreaksVsLions

Here is a recap of tonight’s game from WGIL’s Brad Bennewitz:

“The Galesburg High School football team, finished it’s regular season in enormous style, pulling off the upset of number one Peoria High School 35-28. Silver Streaks did it by forcing 4 Peoria High School turnovers, 3 fumbles, and an interception. The interception by Fernando Diaz was in the endzone, so not only did it deny the Lions a touchdown, but it gave the Silver Streaks the ball back with an opportunity to come back, which they did, winning the game on a 45 yard touchdown pass, from Clark Hawkins to Caleb Clay. That put the Streaks up 35-28 with just under four minutes to go in the game, so they still had to stop the Lions, not only once, but twice as the Silver Streaks got the ball back and couldn’t get a first down. In fact they had, Kobe Ramirez open inside the 10 yard line which would have given them a 1st down and would have sealed the game but the Lions had one more chance with two incomplete passes downfield and the Streaks took over and held on.

Hawkins, in place of  injured starting quarterback Jacob Ross, had a huge night passing for just under 200 yards, in fact he finished with 198 yards, including a touchdown pass not only to Clay but to Jacob CarlClark Hawkins, also rushed for two touchdowns on 1 yard quarterback sneaks. Kobe Ramirez did much of the work on the ground, rushing for 26 times for 87 yards and a touchdown. Tavian Cervantez also had a big 13 yard carry that set up the Streaks’ tying touchdown and Fernando Diaz had a huge 28 yard run on a fake punt on a 4th down that set up the Silver Streaks touchdown that put them ahead right before halftime.

“So Galesburg finishes the regular season 7-2, knocking off the Lions, their first loss of the season, and Galesburg finds out tomorrow what their playoff position will be. They’re right on the border between class 5A and 6A and will 7 wins be enough to get a home game as well? The Silver Streaks certainly think so, the IHSA officially determines it tomorrow when it releases the playoff pairings after 7 o’clock. Galesburg wins it big, 35-28, knocking off the number 1 team in class 5A and finishes the regular season 7-2.”

Our Dave’s Auto Body Crunch Time Player(s) of the Game tonight, actually goes to the entire GHS Silver Streaks team for their outstanding performance tonight while going up against an undefeated team who also was sitting happily in the first place position in class 5A.
