Western Illinois war museum gets rare Vietnam-era vehicles

PITTSFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A western Illinois war museum is now home to two rare, Vietnam-era vehicles.

The (Quincy) Herald-Whig reports Pike County’s All Wars Museum recently received an Army helicopter used to train pilots in Vietnam and a Gama Goat. That’s a six-wheel-drive, semi-amphibious off-road vehicle that was a predecessor to the Humvee.

The items are on loan from the Illinois State Military Museum in Springfield.

Lloyd Lawber is president of the Pike County All Wars Museum, located in the community of Pittsfield. He says it’s “quite a museum.”

Lawber estimates there are fewer than 300 Gama Goats remaining in existence. He says the museum hopes to get the vehicle running and use it in parades.
