The downtown YMCA is set to open December 1st with a ribbon cutting set for November 29th.
YMCA CEO Adam Sampson says it took more than a year to build the facility, which was initially suppose to open over the summer.
The organization raised more than $1 million dollars from donors and the community to make the project happen.
People who have a YMCA membership at the current center on Carl Sandburg Drive can also use the downtown location.
Sampson says the downtown center will feature child care, group fitness and core strengthening.
“There are locker rooms down there — beautiful locker rooms with big showers,” Sampson says. “It’s at no additional cost to customers, just a value add to your membership at the Y.”
Sampson says they will be hiring additional people for the downtown facility.
“The Downtown Y will be operational 24 hours a day for those that are 18 and over,” Sampson says. “If you’re 14 to 17, you’ll have to vacate the Y come 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.”
The downtown location will primarily be a workout space. To use a gym, people must go to the Carl Sandburg facility.
The downtown YMCA building used to be a Wells Fargo bank.
It’s been vacant since 2013 when the bank moved down the street.
