Galesburg resident Ashley LaGrow has been chosen as a leadership seminar chair in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership organization.
Her new volunteer position is after she went through HOBY’s programming herself.
HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.
She tells WGIL about her training in Birmingham, Alabama this summer.
“So, going down to Birmingham allowed me to kind of learn maybe the more boring about the HOBY policies, and all of our codes of conduct and things and how to act as a HOBY volunteer and being able to sit in on different sessions and learn about best funraising practices or how to build your core team, and that sort of thing. Programming ideas, service ideas.”
HOBY programs are open to high school students around the world.
LaGrow is also an elementary school teacher.
She says students are encouraged to do 100 hours of service work and to look at what the needs are in the community and work to address them.
