Run to honor researcher from Illinois killed in Ethiopia

LINDENHURST, Ill. (AP) — A 5-kilometer run is being held to honor a researcher originally from suburban Chicago killed while visiting Ethiopia last month.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports the Nov. 26 event remembering former Lindenhurst resident Sharon Gray will raise money for a scholarship fund in her name aimed at mentoring young women in science.

The 31-year-old was a researcher at the University of California, Davis, and a leader in the study of how climate change affects plants. She was in Ethiopia to launch a research project when anti-government protesters attacked the vehicle she was in. Officials said she was struck by a rock.

Gray earned her doctorate at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She graduated from Antioch Community High School in 2003.

The run will be at Lindenhurst’s Millennium Park.
