The holiday season has begun.

There was little doubt about yesterday in downtown Galesburg as the annual Holiday Parade made it’s way down Main Street.

As usual, Santa made an emergency landing just in time for the parade. About 45 minutes prior to the parade’s 2 p.m. step off time, St. Nick was rescued by Galesburg first responders on the top of First Mid Illinois Bank.

Honored this year as Grand Marshal was long-time and out-going State Rep. Don Moffitt.

Moffitt has grand marshaled a few parades in his day, most recently Hog Days in Kewanee.

As a seasoned hand Moffitt has a few words of advice for any would-be grand marshals.

“Just enjoy the day and let the people know how much you enjoy it and how much you enjoy the parade and what an honor it is to be there,” Moffitt said. “Of course, it’s a kick off to the Christmas season and I just want to be wishing everybody of a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays and I hope it’s best for all of them.”

Over 40 groups and individuals took part yesterday.

Despite the Galesburg Business Association, who organizes the parade moving the date forward a week this year the cold air came just in time.

After an unseasonable warm fall so far yesterday it was a sunny if balmy 35 degrees in downtown Galesburg.
