The 2016 property tax levy is among the decisions Galesburg aldermen will decide on at tonight’s City Council meeting.
City Manager Todd Thompson proposed decreasing this year’s levy, 2.54 percent — a move that some aldermen have questioned.
The reduction would save a $50,000 homeowner about $17 per year. Meanwhile, a hotel/motel tax increase is also on final read.
A 1.8 percent increase would generate roughly $124,000 in additional annual revenue which would be used to fund an expansion of the Galesburg Promise scholarship program.
Thompson and program founder Mayor John Pritchard have both proposed adding home-school and private school students in District 205.
The program funds up to a full degree for 205 graduates who attend Carl Sandburg College. Meanwhile, residents will have the chance to give their opinion on the FY17 budget.
Council is expected to adopt a full budget early next month.
