Knoxville has a new woman at the table, in fact she’s now the only woman.
Retired realtor Karen Benjamin, was seated as the 2nd Ward Alderman at last night’s Knoxville City Council meeting.
She’ll act in the position until the term expires in May 2017.
She’s replacing Dennis Maurer who gave up the seat in September to not invite a conflict of interest since he’s now acting mayor.
As acting mayor, Maurer entertained a discussion on Knoxville’s 2016 property tax levy.
There hasn’t been a vote or even a proposal yet but they have to come to a decision and turn in their levy to County Clerk Scott Erickson by the last Tuesday in December.
Alderman Toby Myers said he wants to keep the levy “lean.”
However, he also said he thinks it’s appropriate to hold a taxing hearing to receive public input even if the levy is raised less than the 5 percent that would make a Truth in Taxation hearing necessary.
