Activists plan Black Friday shopping boycott in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — Activists are calling for a shopping boycott on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile on the busiest shopping day of the year.

The boycott of the city’s famed shopping district on Friday is being organized by a group called the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression.

The group is protesting the city’s refusal to establish an elected Civilian Police Accountability Council in the year since a video was released showing a white police officer fatally shooting black teen Laquan McDonald.

The group also shut down much of Chicago’s Michigan Avenue on Black Friday last year.

The city has implemented a number of reforms but critics complain the city has not done enough. City officials say they plan to create a non-elected citizen oversight board next year.
