Tomorrow, the Knox County YMCA will open up their new 24 hour downtown location to the public.Y and Galesburg city officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony, yesterday afternoon.

The opening has seen a string delays after all of a $1 million capital campaign had been raised.

At one time, CEO Adam Sampson thought they could be open as early as March 2016 but now the nearly 10,000 sq. ft. facility is ready for Y members to use, for no additional membership fee.

He puts up the downtown Y facility up there with the best facilities in the country.

Sampson tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL they’ll have similar equipment to what’s found at West Carl Sandburg Drive, including ellipticals, treadmills and weights.

“They’re definitely state of the art,” Sampson says. They’re going to be a little newer and obviously a little bit better of machines — kind of the Cadillac of machines. Plenty of treadmills, plenty of ellipticals, arc trainers and ‘selecterized equipment,’ I call it. Then there is also a lot of free weights there.”

The lockers are “beautiful,” Sampson says.

There’s also a lobby area where members can talk, have a cup of coffee or do homework.

Also included are downtown group fitness classes.

The key fab that members use at West Carl Sandburg Drive to enter the building will work downtown.
