NWS: first snow headed for Knox County early Sunday

Knox County could get its first dusting of snow this weekend.

Ed Shimon of the National Weather Service says a weather system should arrive this weekend carrying precipitation.

Mainly after midnight Saturday, he says a light snow fall is likely with it picking up steam in the first part of the morning.

Shimon tells WGIL that even with some snow, residents shovels might collect dust a little longer.

“We could see snow accumulations, especially on grassy surfaces up to an inch or snow in the Galesburg area, but temperatures are going to start warming as we head towards the noon hour Sunday,” Shimon says. “Snow will probably start weather changing over to rain and the precipitation should go to an end sometime in the afternoon Sunday.”

Shimon gives a 25 to 40 percent that Knox County will have snow for Christmas.

Some forecasters have predicted a frigid, harsh winter and at this point the NWS is forecasting average to below average temperatures for December, January and February.

This is after snowfall has been relatively low the last few winters.

At least for December, Shimon assures that below zero temps for December are uncommon.

His models aren’t indicating that this year will be abnormal as far as a freezing December.
