Lawyer seeks to replace 105-year murder sentence

The lawyer for a convicted killer is arguing that his 105-year sentence is excessive.  The (Aurora) lawyer Bruce Lewin says Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler should have given more consideration to the age of the defendant.  Dimitri Green-Hosey was 18 years, eight months old when he shot Arin Williams in the head in 2014.  Lewin is seeking a new sentencing hearing.  Lewin argues the sentence is “cruel and unusual punishment” in violation of the Constitution and does not consider Green-Hosey’s chances at rehabilitation.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that it was unconstitutional for juveniles convicted of two murders to automatically receive life in prison.  Lewin says a juvenile doesn’t automatically become an adult immediately after turning 18.
