Representatives from the Illinois State Board of Education were in Galesburg last night to get feedback on the Every Student Succeeds Act.
Otherwise known as ESSA, the act was signed into law by President Barack Obama, last December.
Silas Willard Elementary was the site for the Galesburg stop of ISBE’s listening to tour to gain public input on Illinois’ implementation of ESSA.
This is the third listening tour since the law was passed.
ESSA replaces the controversial No Child Left Behind Act as the policy that governs United States education for grades K-12.
It modifies but doesn’t replace standardized testing. It also holds states accountable on focusing resources to low performing schools.
Updates to ISBE’s implementation plan will be posted at isbe.net/essa and there citizens can find ways to make their voice heard on the plan.
ISBE’s final plan must be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education by April 7.
