
Ruth E. “Ruthie” Johnson, 93, a resident at Marigold Rehab & Health Care Center in Galesburg, formerly of Galva and Bishop Hill, died at 7:25 a.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at the center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 6 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Bishop Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Bishop Hill Heritage Association.
She was born July 23, 1923 in Bishop Hill, the daughter of Logan and Margaret (Falk) Johnson. She is survived by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Olivia “Tootsie” Hultgren and five brothers, Chuck, Leland “Pete”, Emmett, Dwren and James Johnson.
Ruthie attended school in Bishop Hill and then graduated from Galva High School in 1941. She had worked at various places over the years including the Bishop Hill Grocery Store, Hathaways, the Galva Creamery and the Galva Historical Society Wiley House. Ruthie had also been a caregiver for several of her family members but especially for her brothers Emmett and Chuck. She was a “good old Bishop Hill gal” and was very proud of having been raised and lived in Bishop Hill. She was an avid participant in the many Bishop Hill activities , especially the parades. In her early years, she played softball and was an avid bowler. She was a VASA Lodge member for many years and she enjoyed the company of her friends.
