The race for Galesburg Mayor has taken a contentious turn.Mayor John Pritchard used his opportunity for comments at the tail end of last night’s Galesburg City Council meeting to call out his opponent in the April race, Walt McAllister.

Pritchard referring to comments McAllister made at a forum hosted by the Knox County Tea Party on Feb. 27, regarding the sale of the Old Central Fire Station to MAK Properties.

Pritchard recalled McAllister saying the building was sold “for much less than the building was worth and that the buyer “stole the building” and likened these comments to slander.

WGIL could not find evidence of McAllister making these comments however a list of individuals who were present have confirmed McAllister made the statements including City Clerk Kelli Bennewitz, Alderman Wayne Allen, and Tea Party members Patrick Harlan, Isaiah Harlan and Shaela Duckweiler.

Pritchard said the building was sold at $115,000 the highest appraised price with the city council approving it.

McAllister stopped by the media table on the way out of last night’s meeting to counter Pritchard, “I never said that.”
