Abingdon – Mark A. Moon, 91, of Galesburg and formerly of Abingdon, passed away at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2017 in the same bedroom he grew up in as a young boy, on the family farm in Fulton County near Marietta, Illinois.
He was born November 22, 1925 in Fulton County, the son of Charles K. and Ruth Ann Smith Moon. He married Dona Marie Davis on October 5, 1947 at the Abingdon Christian Church. She preceded him in death on October 14, 2016.
Mark is survived by his children, Michael (Nancy) Moon of Clarkston, Michigan, Virginia (Bob) Nott of Abingdon, Chuck (Mary) Moon of Burlington, North Carolina and Kay (Terry) Clemans of Medinah; three granddaughters and ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Mark lived most of his life in Abingdon. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1943 and was one of three Little Six all-stars of the Abingdon football team which inspired the nickname that became the official mascot, Abingdon Commandos. He was a World War II Navy veteran and was stationed in California and Hawaii. He worked at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg for 43 years and retired as a Tool and Die Maker on February 1, 1987. He was very active throughout his life and in early married days, he and Dona enjoyed square dancing. He was a collector of Abingdon Pottery and member of the Abingdon Pottery Club. He was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church. He was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon. He enjoyed woodworking and was masterful at his craft and he enjoyed helping friends or anyone who would ask for help with a woodworking project. He was proud to see his beloved Cubs win the World Series.
Cremation will be accorded. To celebrate his life, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Abingdon Christian Church, 409 S. Main St. in Abingdon. Rev. Darryl McDaniel will officiate. Mark and Dona’s ashes will be buried together following the service, at the Abingdon Cemetery where Military Rites will be conducted in honor of Mark’s service to our country. The family will receive family and friends in a time of fellowship at the church after the service at the cemetery. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
