CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago man found in 2015 to be carrying a gun linked to the shootings of two children has pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
Demond Coffee entered the plea Monday, the day he was to go to trial on the charges before U.S. District Judge Elaine Bucklo.
The gun was allegedly used in the July 2015 fatal shooting of 7-year-old Amari Brown. Police say the boy’s father was the intended target. Prosecutors allege the weapon was used five weeks later to wound a 15-year-old boy. Two men are awaiting trial in Amari’s death.
The Chicago Tribune reports in his plea agreement, the 26-year-old Coffee did not admit to knowing the semiautomatic pistol’s history.
The plea declaration said prosecutors would likely argue factors that could lead to substantial prison time for Coffee.
