
Shirley Ann Sundell, 74 of Abingdon, passed away at 9:07 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2017at Seminary Manor in Galesburg.
She was born April 19, 1943 in Abingdon, the daughter of Floyd J. and Mary L. Sparger Engle. She married James P. Schisler in 1960 and they later divorced. She later married Gary L. Sundell on June 23, 1989 in Abingdon. Gary preceded her in death on April 21, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Floyd “Corky” Engle.
Shirley is survived by her children, Rhonda (Sam) Watkins of rural London Mills, Michael Schisler of rural Galesburg and Brian (Johanna) Schisler of Knoxville; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Zack Brown) Watkins, Ethan Schisler, Tatym Schisler and Julianna Larson-Turner; her siblings, Jack (Marsha) Engle of rural Abingdon and Marcia (Richard) Olomon of Abingdon; stepchildren, Todd (Vanessa) Sundell and family, Steve Otto and family, and Kathy Smith; step-grandchildren, Robert (Kate) Watkins, Tracie (Jared) Yocum and Steve Watkins and step-great-grandchildren, Justin (Carissa) Yocum, Brandon Watkins, Joseph Yocum, and Sammie Watkins; and several nieces, nephews and their families.
She had lived in Abingdon most of her life. She attended Abingdon schools and later received her GED. She was of the Christian faith. Shirley was a homemaker and “Great Mother” and made sure her kids had what they needed and sometimes, what they wanted. She had worked as a CNA, at Burgland’s, the Golden Bear, the Admiral Factory and at St. Mary Square in Galesburg. She played Yahtzee with her family or by herself. She also enjoy going to the riverboats. But most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 12, 2017 at the Abingdon Cemetery with Eleanor Landon officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service in a time of food and fellowship at the Church of God of Prophecy, 207 N. Washington St. in Abingdon. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
