GENEVA, Ill. (AP) — Residents in one Chicago-area county should be hearing “cock-a-doodle-doo” at the crack of dawn a lot less often from here on out.
That’s because Kane County’s board Tuesday enacted a ban on roosters for most unincorporated property. It’s effective immediately.
The prohibition is a response to complaints from sleep-deprived suburbanites about the crowing. Other communities near Chicago allow chickens. But Kane County was one of the few to also give the OK to roosters, until this week.
The new restrictions don’t slam the door on all roosters. Residents who live on a certain minimum acreage can keep them if they remain at least 100 feet from neighbors. And if all your neighbors are fine with rooster noise, a zoning exception is possible.
