CHICAGO (AP) — A giraffe that spent most of its 28 years of life at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo has died.
Zoo officials said Thursday that Sabrena, a geriatric female giraffe, was euthanized Tuesday after her health deteriorated dramatically due to her advanced age.
The median life expectancy for giraffe that survive their first year, which is a risky time for most mammals, is 19-and-a-half years.
Sabrena was born at the Oklahoma City zoo and lived all but four years of her life at Lincoln Park Zoo.
General Curator Dave Bernier says she would often be seen interacting with keepers or stretching her long legs outside.
Zoo officials say Sabrena showed increasing evidence of colic and had become unresponsive to medication.
