Former detective who stole drugs gets 11-year sentence

CHICAGO (AP) — A former suburban Chicago police detective who pleaded guilty earlier this year to stealing drugs from his department’s evidence room has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison.

44-year-old Gregory Salvi was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Chicago.

In April, Salvi pleaded guilty to felony counts of possession of more than 500 grams of cocaine with intent to deliver and using a gun in a drug trafficking crime.

Salvi was arrested after FBI surveillance revealed that he’d picked up narcotics at the Melrose Park Police station where he worked and showed up to a storage facility to sell them to an informant he believed to be a drug dealer.
