CSC Chargers Volleyball team sweeps Black Hawk

After nearly jumping onto the national rankings following an impressive weekend, the Carl Sandburg College volleyball team stayed hot with a sweep of Arrowhead Conference rival Black Hawk yesterday 25-21, 25-14, 25-15.

The Chargers went 5-1, including defeating No. 12 Waubonsee, over the weekend at the Waubonsee Invite – have won nine of their last ten and haven’t dropped a set in three home matches.

The hot streak helped Sandburg be first among others receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Divisin II poll, which came out Tuesday afternoon.

Josalyn Owens had six of her team-leading 15 kills in the first set, helping Sandburg build a 24-13 early – but BHC went on an 8-0 run before Sandburg closed them out.

Sandburg led the second set 13-12 before winning seven of the next eight to take a bigger lead, 20-11.

Sandburg’s third set didn’t start out so strong, being down 6-5 early – but the Chargers took the lead for good with a 7-0 run that included four aces from Hannah Thompson.

Thompson contributed a team-best 18 digs for the Chargers, and sophomore Sam Mayberry turned in three blocks to lead CSC.

Emma Derry had 21 assists, and Camerin Huizenga had 14. Jordan Price had seven kills and Lexi Strange tallied six.

Knox College got the sweep of Rockford 25-16, 25-13, 25-13 improving to 7-7 on the year.

Knox’s Rose Griffin led the Prairie Fire with 12 kills, while Mady Ferris had 19 digs, and Kyleigh Guthals had 14.

 

HIGH SCHOOL
VOLLEYBALL
The Galesburg Silver Streaks girls fell to visiting Western Big 6 rival Moline in straight sets last night 25-19, 25-17.

GHS got off to a slow start and were trailing 21-11 before Yvonne Mixon helped the Streaks cut the lead down to 21-16 and Maddie Carlson aided to make it 22-19 before Moline was able to close out the first set.

The second set started much of the same for the Streaks as Moline took a 13-9 lead – but GHS battled to tie it up at 13.

The Maroons were able to take back the lead and never giving it up to close out the Silver Streaks.

 

BOYS GOLF
Ridgewood defeated United at Gibson Woods with a 153-184 score.

The Spartans’ Thomas Bumann earned medalist honors with a 35 while Levi Swanson shot a 37 and Riley Nelson carded a 38.

United was led by Drew Brown with 44, and Zach Marshall and Andrew Fuller who each had a 46.

 

BOYS SOCCER
The matchup between Galesburg and Moline ended in a 0-0 tie after double overtime.

 

GIRLS TENNIS
The Silver Steaks girls were edged by United Township 5-4.

Adyson Eastburg Dominated Shikha Adtikar 6-0, 6-0 while Reagan Mudd beat Hailey Peppa 6-2, 6-2 and Tiara Pendleton defeated Nan Li 6-4, 6-3.

In a doubles matchup it was Reagan Mudd and Gwendolyn Allison winning over Hailey Pepper and Nan Li 6-6 (7-4), 6-4.

 

JR. HIGH BASKETBALL
The Churchill 7th and 8th grade girls got the sweep of Mercer County yesterday.

The Blue Streak’s 7th graders won by a 30-27 score, and the 8th grade girls had a 35-22 win over the Golden Eagles.

The Lombard Jr. High teams split their games with Orion.

The Chargers edged out the Zephyrs 34-31 in the 7th grade matchup, but then Lombard’s 8th graders dominated Orion 34-12.
