Churchill 7th graders go 2-1 in Saturday tournament

On Saturday the Churchill 7th grade girls basketball team took part in the Stark County tournament. 

First game against Midland was a 40-14 victory for the Blue Streaks.

Cayman Milroy led the girls with 11 points while Lilly Clark and Kayla Pendergast added tallied 8 points each.

Game two was against Annawan and it ended in a 34-30 loss. Hannah Dillbeck led the Blue Streaks with 12.

The third and final game was against the host team – Stark County – and Churchill won 37-29.

Hannah Dillbeck again led the Blue Steaks with 12 points while Kayla Pendergast and Cayman Milroy racked up 8 points.

The 7th grade girls are now 8-4.

 

AREA COLLEGE
FOOTBALL
The Knox College Prairie Fire football team suffered a heartbreaking loss at Lake Forest after leading 21-14 heading in the 4th quarter.

Knox gave the undefeated Foresters a run for their money and almost came out with a win.

Lake Forest scored early in the fourth quarter to tie the game up and a three and out by the Fire on the ensuing drive gave the Foresters the momentum to close the game out with a touchdown.

Knox was unable to get anything going the rest of the 4th quarter and dropped the contest 28-21.

The Monmouth College Fighting Scots defense continues its dominance, as Monmouth rolls through Grinnell College 49-0.

In their third straight outing, the Scots held their opponent scoreless, this time with conference implications on the line.

After being held scoreless through the first quarter, Monmouth would lead heading into the break 21-0.

The Scots defense held Grinnell to only 108 total yards of offense.

Anchored by senior Kyle Schultz’s eight total tackles, the Scots would allow the Pioneers to move the chains only five times with a two third down conversions in 15 attempts.

 

VOLLEYBALL
The Prairie Fire volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon, losing to Lawrence 3-2.

Knox led two sets to none and looked to be in the driver’s seat, but Lawrence fought back to win the final three sets and take the match.

Rose Griffin amassed 24 kills to lead the Prairie Fire. Emily Mosher tallied 46 assists and KyLeigh Guthals added 27 digs.

The Prairie Fire will travel to Cornell on Wednesday.

Seeking to bounce back from the evening prior, the Scots 3rd set victory was not enough to force a rally as they fall to the Red Hawks 3-1.

Monmouth will have four days to regroup before they welcome Midwest Conference opponent Illinois College to Glennie Gymnasium for a 7pm match on Wednesday.

 

MEN’S SOCCER
The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team was unable to get much going offensively in a 3-0 Region IV loss to Waubonsee on a breezy Saturday afternoon at Galesburg High School’s Van Dyke Field.

The Chargers were limited to just one shot on goal in the contest, their second in as many days.

Sandburg will play their final home contest of the regular season at 1 p.m. Oct. 14 against Oakton
