Churchill girls basketball team goes undefeated in Stark County

On Saturday the Churchill 8th grade girls took part in the Stark County tournament and there the Blue Streaks went undefeated. 

In game one, Churchill dominated Midland 34-13.

Game two with Annawan was another dominant win 37-17.

The final game of the day was with the host team, Stark County, where the Blue Streaks shut down the Rebels 33-9.

In game one, Abby Lingafelter racked up 10 points of her own.

In game two Kadynce Lydic led with 12 points.

In game three it was Grace Nelson scoring 10 to combine for 29 points to lead the Blue Streaks shooters.

 

AREA COLLEGE
FOOTBALL
After a narrow loss just a week ago, the Knox College football team was not messing around when they stepped on the field against Grinnell College – dominating 56-14 on Saturday.

Knox (4-2, 1-1 MWC) crushed the Pioneers thanks to fantastic play from the Fire defense.

The Fire will look to continue winning when they travel to Jacksonville to take on Illinois College on October 21.

Monmouth maintained a tie with Lake Forest for the top spot in the Midwest Conference South Division with a 59-14 win over Illinois College.

Deandre Wright rushed for 168 yards, averaging more than 11 yards per carry while Hayden Nelson passed for 115 yards and three scores.

Kyle Schultz led the Monmouth defense with 10 tackles and two interceptions as Monmouth picked off IC four times and recovered a pair of fumbles.

 

WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Prairie Fire women’s soccer team earned a conference victory on Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated in MWC play, shutting out Ripon College 3-0.

Angie Gamez found the back of the net at the 13:27 mark in the first half.

Corina Leyva and Kayla Brown both added goals in the second half to seal the victory.

Monmouth picked up a crucial three points in the Midwest Conference race on Sunday with a 2-1 overtime win at Lake Forest.

The win pulled the Scots within four points of league leader St. Norbert, one back of Knox and three ahead of Grinnell in the battle the four MWC playoff berths.

 

MEN’S SOCCER
With seven team goals in total, the Prairie Fire men’s soccer team rolled past Ripon College 7-0 on Sunday to remain perfect in Midwest Conference play.

Knox dominated all aspects of the game, putting 19 shots and goal compared to Ripon’s mere 3, all of which were saved by Justin Dunn.

Monmouth gave Lake Forest – picked third in the Midwest Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll – all the Foresters wanted before falling 1-0 in the northern Chicago suburbs on Sunday.

The Foresters squeezed in the game’s lone goal in the third minute and then held on for the win.

Oakton broke a scoreless tie at halftime with three unanswered second-half goals to defeat the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team 3-0 on Saturday in a rain-shortened Region IV contest at Galesburg High School’s Van Dyke Field.

The Chargers (6-11-1 overall, 6-6-1 Region IV) were limited to just two shots on goal – one in each half – against a stingy back line for the Owls (10-4-1, 8-4-1).
