School district responds to transgender student’s lawsuit

PALATINE, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago school district facing a lawsuit over a transgender student’s use of the girls’ locker room says the allegations misrepresent the accommodations extended to the student.

The Chicago Tribune reports that 18-year-old Nova Maday filed a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court last week.

Maday alleges that Township High School District 211 in Palatine initially denied her use of the girls’ locker during physical education class. She also alleges the district more recently restricted her to an “unspecified private changing area within the locker room” where no one else is required to change.

District Superintendent Daniel Cates said Friday that transgender students who have requested locker room use in line with their gender have been offered such access.

Maday’s lawsuit follows a previous federal complaint by another transgender student against the district.
