CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) — A Charleston woman faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of her 2-year-old child.
Authorities say 22-year-old Savannah M. Weiss is in custody at the Coles County jail on $1.5 million bond. Charleston police said Thursday that officers and paramedics responding to a report of an unresponsive child found the child deceased. Police say Weiss said she left the child unattended in a playpen from Friday to Sunday. Police say Weiss awoke Monday to find the child unresponsive.
Police records say the child was found among old food and “accrued filth.” Authorities say an autopsy found the child’s cause of death was due to dehydration and malnourishment.
Weiss doesn’t have a listed phone number to request comment. Court records don’t list a defense attorney. She is due in court Monday.
