Illinois Attorney General race a battle over independence

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – Eight Democrats and two Republicans are vying for the Attorney General seat following Lisa Madigan’s surprise announcement that she won’t seek a fifth term.

The race has become a battle of who is most politically and financially independent. Perceived front runners on the Democratic side are Sen. Kwame Raoul and former Gov. Pat Quinn. The two recently engaged in an ad campaign war accusing each other of conflicts of interest.

Other candidates say they’ll be an independent voice who can stand up to the party establishment and fight public corruption.

Attorney and former Miss America Erika Harold faces litigation attorney Gary Grasso for the Republican nomination.

The primary election is March 20.
