Former Chicago police chief to challenge mayor who fired him

CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago’s former police chief says he’s running for mayor against the man who fired him.

Former Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy announced on his campaign website late Wednesday that he’ll challenge Mayor Rahm Emanuel in the February 2019 election.

McCarthy was police chief in 2014 when a white police officer fatally shot black teenager Laquan McDonald. Emanuel fired McCarthy the next year when a judge ordered the city to release dashcam video showing McDonald being shot 16 times.

Former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas says he also is considering a run.

McCarthy was the police chief in Newark, New Jersey, after a long career in which he rose through the ranks of New York City’s police force. Emanuel chose him to run Chicago’s police department in 2011.
